1) Please describe your event:
I have a public access TV show called The Lorton Show (TheLortonShow.com)
here in Fairfax County just across the Potomac River from your upcoming
new home on Pennsylvania Ave. I had hoped to evolve it by mid February
09 to center around a monthly town hall meeting that would be the focus
of one of the weeks the month's episodes. The rest of the weeks of the
month shows are about what goes on here in Lorton or topics of interest
to the community.
I had hoped to connect it to your incoming administration in some way to these town hall meetings knowing that you were planning on having an open dialogue with the American people about where you want to take us. With the news coming out about your wanting the same kind of format with town hall meetings for health care as I had planned, I am working to get our first town hall meeting done by your December 31 deadline. And I find the whole process very exciting.
2) What are the major areas you want to discuss?
Health as it relates to pollution in the environment and products we use. My view is that one of the best directions we can take to secure our health needs is to limit our exposure to pollutants that are the primary cause of most illness. Lorton is next to one of the most congested highways in the country so it is a concern for all of us who live here. I am fluent in understand the effects of pollution on human health and the environment and also what can be done to mitigate it, which can mostly be done as an all around benefit to the economy so this is a great time to be working in that direction.
I believe the most pressing issues about toxins American are exposed to at dangerously high levels are already on many Americans minds and would have been dealt with a long time ago except that it seems the Bush administration has no interest in approaching these problems realistically. I have great hopes that your way of doing things will greatly differ from his and want to support the process of helping you make the right decisions at every level you make available to me.
Why should the health policy team
send Senator Daschle to your event?:
Because our town hall meeting will be put on TV in a format I am working
hard to make into a success story that will inspire other communities
who have access to public nonprofit TV to put together their own community
based shows that allow the voice of average citizens to engage in a new
kind of transparency process that insures that if there is information
that the American people would benefit from knowing that is not being
broadcast by the greater mainstream news media, there is an outlet for
it to become part of the greater political debate about how to mend our
seeming broken country so can get back on a path of greater health and
prosperity
